Honoring Our EMS Heroes: EMS Week at Hereford Regional Medical Center

May 18–24 is Emergency Medical Services Week, a time to recognize the skill, dedication, and bravery of the first responders who are there when our community needs them most.

At Hereford Regional Medical Center, our EMS professionals play a vital role — not just in emergency situations, but in the full continuum of care. From rapid response during critical moments to follow-up support at home through our award-winning Community Paramedicine Program, they are a constant presence in our patients’ journeys.

“Our EMS team is essential for providing expert, timely care when every minute matters,” said Candice Smith, MSN, RHCNOC, CCRN, CEO of Deaf Smith County Hospital District. “Their ability to deliver skillful and compassionate care, even in extreme or high-pressure situations, sets the standard for reliable emergency care.”

In recent years, the scope of EMS care in our region has expanded. Our Community Paramedicine Program, launched in 2021, allows paramedics and care teams to visit patients at home after hospital discharge — reducing hospital readmissions from 35% to just 5% in the first year. This innovative model continues to gain recognition across the state, earning the 2023 Bill Aston Award for Quality from the Texas Hospital Association.

Whether responding to a 911 call or helping a patient manage recovery at home, our EMS professionals show up — prepared, compassionate, and committed. Their work often goes unseen, but its impact is deeply felt.

This EMS Week, we thank every paramedic, EMT, nurse, and first responder for their courage, expertise, and service. You are the backbone of emergency care in our community.

Happy EMS Week — and thank you for all you do.
