60 Years of Service: Honoring Dr. Howard “Dr. J” Johnson
Hereford Regional Medical Center is proud to celebrate Dr. Howard “Dr. J” Johnson for 60 years of providing pre-natal care and obstetrics for women of Deaf Smith County and beyond
Dr. Johnson first came to Hereford in the 1960s after a medical school classmate spotted a job posting.
“They said they needed a doctor in Hereford, and I said I need a job,” he said in an interview with KFDA Channel 10.
Over six decades, Dr. Johnson has delivered more than 8,500 babies in our hospital, built a trusted practice, and helped shape the healthcare landscape of Hereford. Today, the hospital has a baby nursery, and has a Level I maternal care designation from the state. With a team of nearly 30 labor and delivery nurses and three obstetricians, Hereford Regional Medical Center continues to prioritize providing labor and delivery care, even as many other rural hospitals have had to shut down services.
Dr. J is a part of countless stories in our community. Many of the babies he delivered grew up to become nurses, lab techs, respiratory therapists, and even hospital leaders.
“I’ve delivered doctors, lawyers, teachers, the CEO of this hospital,” he said. “It’s exciting to see them working here with me.”
He says that even after all these years, the best part of his job is still being in the delivery room.
“Holding that baby, they’re wet, crying… it’s one of the most exhilarating things in medicine.”
We’re honored to recognize Dr. Johnson not just for the years he’s given but for the heart he’s brought to his work every single day. Thank you, Dr. J. Your impact is lasting, and your commitment is deeply appreciated.
