Get Your Student Athlete’s Health Taken Care of Before Tryouts
Health First. School Ready.
As tryouts approach and sports schedules fill up, one of the most important things you can do to set your student-athlete up for success is scheduling a sports physical. It’s more than a school requirement — it’s a smart step toward protecting your child’s health and performance throughout the season.
Why Sports Physicals Matter
Sports physicals, also known as pre-participation physical exams (PPEs), are designed to check whether your child is healthy and physically ready to participate in sports. They help identify any potential health concerns that could impact performance or lead to injury, including heart conditions, joint problems, asthma, or prior concussions.
And while most schools require a completed physical before the season begins, it’s not just about checking a box. It’s about making sure your child is safe and ready — physically and mentally — for the demands of their sport.
“We want every student-athlete in our community to feel confident stepping onto the field or court,” said Candice R. Smith, MSN, RHCNOC, CCRN, RACR, Chief Executive Officer. “A sports physical is a small investment of time that can prevent serious health issues and give parents peace of mind heading into the season.”
What Happens During a Sports Physical?
At Hereford Health Clinic, our providers perform a thorough check-up that includes:
- A detailed medical history review
- A physical exam to assess heart, lungs, joints, and flexibility
- Discussion of any injuries, symptoms, or health changes
- Clearance or follow-up care recommendations if needed
If your student has any ongoing conditions like asthma, allergies, or joint pain, this visit is a great opportunity to make sure their care plan is up-to-date.
Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute
Appointments fill quickly once school starts, and waiting too long can lead to delays or missed tryouts. By scheduling early, you ensure your student-athlete has time to address any issues that might arise and start their season feeling strong, safe, and ready.
